Opal Is a Very Unusual Gemstone

 Opals are different from other gemstones, firstly they are not clear,  are very porous and contain a high percentage of water and when you first look at them they do not look special. But when you place an opal under a good source of light and turn it around the magic happens.  What it looks like an ordinary bland stone will transform itself in a gemstone of many colours. It is not surprising then to learn that for years opals were considered magic stones with special properties and very valuable, unfortunately around the 18th century people started to see them as unlucky and a bad omen. Combined with the fact that a very large deposit of opals was found in Australia the price of these stones collapsed. These days opals are not longer perceived as unlucky.
